Personal Care Services
Alpha’s personal care services are provided by “Registered Health Care Assistants”
Registered Health Care Assistants are the front-line care providers in a variety of institutional , community, and residential settings, and are an integral part of the British Columbia health care system.
The BC Registry is governed by an Advisory Committee that continually upgrades its standard and competencies. This ensures the Vancouver Island Health Authority, and home care employers, that care aides have a diploma or certificate from a recognized school in Canada, and have been evaluated for current and established competencies. Care aides registered with the BC Care Aide Registry receive a unique identifying number.
Clients and families can be assured our Registered Care Aides have specialty training to provide personal care for seniors and disabled persons. Alpha sets the highest standards for our personal care services in accordance with the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
Our Personal Care Services Include:
- Personal Hygiene Assistance,
- Bathing Assistance (shower & sponge bath),
- Toileting Assistance, including Incontinence Care,
- Skin Care,
- Dressing Assistance,
- Walking & Mobility Assistance,
- Assisted Transfers and/or use of Special Equipment,
- Nutrition Assistance,
- Total bed Care (for clients confined to a bed.)
Monitored Nursing Tasks
Our Registered Care Aides are trained to perform selected nursing tasks that are monitored and part of the Client Care Plan. Supplemental to their formal education, Alpha provides a Vancouver Island Health Authority developed “Medication and Safety Course.” This course is to ensure Registered Care Aides have the knowledge to effectively carry out “Monitored Nursing Tasks” in accordance with safety policies and procedures. These tasks may include:
- Blister Pac and/or Dosette Medications that are pre-dosed by a pharmacist or family member,
- RX Eye & Ear Drops,
- RX Creams & Ointments,
- Inhalation Devices,
- Nitro & Excelon Patches,
- Urinary Catheter,
- Colostomy Appliance & Care (emptying, changing, cleaning bag),
- Compression Stockings.
Registered Care Aides provide walking, hovering assistance, and assisted transfers.
When an individual is unable to weight bare for an “Assisted Transfer”, our Registered Care Aides are trained in the use of overhead lifts, and special equipment.
